Description:
Abstract:
The Global Historical Large Wildfires layer represents large wildfires over 9884 acres in size (~40 km2 standard deviation) as derived from 1-km Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) thermal anomaly data. The layer contains large wildfires from March 2000 through December 2018 and was produced from a data feed from the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology (HIGP) at the University of Hawaii (UH). It contains information on the date, location, size, and intensity of each large wildfire.
Purpose:
Wildfires pose serious hazards to sensitive ecosystems, transportation and communication networks, and to populated regions. Timely dissemination of this data to scientists and to local civil defense officials is crucial in efforts to understand and to minimize losses from hazardous hotspot activity.

Process Description:
A text file is downloaded from HIGP and is imported into an Excel spreadsheet. In ArcMap, the Excel file is converted to a File Geodatabase Feature Class and any clusters which fall in a water body are removed. The Large Fires model is run on the feature class to calculate and create buffers (buffer distance of 2km) from the input points, convert the date field, add correct field formats for SDE, drop unnecessary fields and project to WGS 1984 Web Mercator (Auxiliary Sphere).
