Description:
Abstract: A tsunami is a series of waves generated by an impulsive disturbance in the ocean or in a small, connected body of water. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service/National Geophysical Data Center's (NOAA/NESDIS/NGDC) tsunami run-up database contains information on locations where tsunami effects occurred. This database provides information on tsunami events from 49 B.C. to the present (December 2019) in the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas, and the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans.
Purpose: The preparation of this history was undertaken because of the evident need for an up-to-date and comprehensive compilation. The previously available history of tsunamis in the United States and environs was scattered through several regional catalogs, research papers, and unpublished works. The continued research of several people has improved these now-dated catalogs. The present history incorporated all works known to the compilers into a single, comprehensive volume.

Process Step:
Process Description: For data the year of 2019: Data downloaded from the source as a text file, for only that year. Then using FME, time and date fields were concatenated, conditional values were set for description fields, and data standardization took place. PDC required fields were added and joined to global admin boundaries for Admin0-Admin2 to fill those fields. Data was also projected to Web Mercator Auxiliary Sphere. For data between the earliest date and 2018, the process is as follows: A text file is downloaded from NGDC and is imported into an Excel spreadsheet. In Excel, the Date fields are converted to ESRI format and concatenated into one field. In ArcMap, the Excel file is converted to a File Geodatabase Feature Class. The Tsunami Runups model is run on the feature class to convert the date field, add correct field formats for SDE, drop unnecessary fields, project to WGS 1984 Web Mercator (Auxiliary Sphere), and dissolve from point to multipoint. The Tsunami Runups Time script is run on the resulting feature class to calculate the day/time for each runup.
