Description:
Abstract: An earthquake is the motion or trembling of the ground produced by sudden displacement of rock in the Earth's crust. This data layer represents significant historical earthquake locations around the world. Each point contains information such as the date and magnitude of the earthquake. This data was compiled by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service/National Geophysical Data Center (NOAA/NESDIS/NGDC) from the Catalog of Significant Earthquakes and the Database for Instrumentally Recorded Earthquakes. The Significant Earthquake Database is a global digital database containing information on more than 5,000 destructive earthquakes from 2150 B.C. to the present (March 2019). The events in the file must meet at least one of the following criteria: moderate damage (approximately $1 million or more), 10 or more deaths, magnitude 7.5 or greater, or Modified Mercalli intensity X or greater (for events lacking magnitude). Instrumentally recorded events include earthquakes of Richter magnitude > 6.0. The events occurring prior to 1900 were assigned an epicenter based on the locations where damage occurred.
Purpose: The Significant Earthquake Database is a global digital database containing information on more than 5,000 destructive earthquakes from 2150 B.C. to the present (December 2015).

Logical Consistency Report: The event coordinates of approximately 100 earthquakes in this database are not known and the latitude and longitude are listed as 0.0. Therefore, to search for all the events from a particular country or state, do not use the event coordinates parameter. While NGDC makes every effort to ensure that its databases are error- free, errors do occur. We ask that you notify us immediately of any errors that you discover in our data; we will make every effort to correct them.

Process Step:
Process Description: The earthquake database used in this publication was customized at the NGDC. Both the Significant Earthquake Database and the Seismicity of the Earth Database were combined into one final earthquake dataset. Redundant earthquakes were excluded. The database now contains earthquake events that date from 2100 B.C.. The database was updated to include significant earthquake events through December 2015. The new database was downloaded in a ESRI shapefile format from the NOAA/NGDC Natural Hazards Viewer (http://map.ngdc.noaa.gov/website/seg/hazards/viewer.htm) using the extract function. Bad values such as Month > 12 or = 0, Days = 0, and Hour > 24 were fixed. Due to limitations on the SDE DATE field, YEAR values less than 110 were converted to 111. An additional column was added to hold original years called YEAR_REAL. PDC processing: Reprojected the shapefile to Web Mercator projection and WGS84 datum.
