Description:
Abstract:
Tropical cyclone storm tracks are charts and projections of severe storm and hurricane/typhoon movement. This layer is updated annually and depicts historical storm tracks starting from 1940 through 2015 for the Pacific (Western, Eastern, and Southern), Indian and Atlantic Ocean regions. Only storms that were classified above a tropical depression in strength, wind speeds > 30 mph for 2 or more 6-hour periods, have been included. Information includes charts on the track of the storm, tracking position in latitude and longitude, maximum sustained winds in knots, and central pressure in millibars.
Purpose:
Tropical cyclone storm track data are intended primarily to provide guidance to meteorologists, oceanographers and other air-ocean environmental specialists.

Process Description:
The Pacific Disaster Center downloaded historical storm track information in textual form from the Unisys Weather and the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC)/ Tropical Cyclone Best Track Data websites. The textual data was converted to ESRI shapefile format. The shapefile was then reprojected to World Mercator with WGS84 datum.
