Description:
Abstract: The PDC Active Hazards layer visualizes a collection of current and real-time incidents which have been designated "potentially hazardous to people, property, or assets" by PDC DisasterAWARE decision support system automated and manual processes. Hazards are typically expired automatically based on pre-defined timelines but can be left active for as long as deemed necessary by the professionals responsible for maintaining hazard data.
Purpose: The purpose of the Hazards data layer is to merge hazards of interest into a single user-friendly layer.
Supplemental Information: Automated Hazards are created and expired as follows: (1.) Tropical Cyclones. A hazard is created when JTWC/NWS issue an Advisory status bulletin. The hazard will remain active until canceled by JTWC/NWS. (2.) Earthquakes. A hazard is created when USGS issues a bulletin for an earthquake of 5.0 magnitude or greater. The hazard will remain active for up to 4 days, depending on magnitude. (3.) Volcanoes. A hazard is created when a bulletin is issued by one of 9 Volcanic Ash Advisory Centers (VAAC). The hazard will remain active for up to 4 days after the last advisory is issued, depending on the hazard severity. (4.) Tsunamis. The hazard is created when PTWC/NTWC issues a tsunami bulletin. The hazard will remain active until canceled by PTWC/NTWC. (5.) High Winds/High Surf/Flash Floods for Hawaii. These hazards are created when NWS issues an advisory for high wind, flash flooding, or high surf events for Hawaii. The hazards will remain active until canceled by NWS. (6.) Wildfires. These hazards are created based on VIIRS hotspot data from NASA using an algorithm developed by PDC to detect clusters of wildfire radiance. These hazards will remain active for up to 4 days depending, depending on hazard severity. (7.) Tornados. These hazards are created when NWS issues a Tornado Watch or Tornado Warning. The hazard will remain active until canceled by NWS. (8.) US Floods. These hazards are created when NWS issues a Flood Warning for a Flash Flood, Riverine Flood, Areal Flood or Lakeshore Flood. The hazard will remain active until the last area message is canceled by NWS. (9.) US Winter Storms. These hazards are created when NWS issues a Winter Storm Warning. The hazard will remain active until the last area message is canceled by NWS.
