Abstract: This Earthquake Intensity Zones layer, obtained through the United Nations Environmental Programme/Global Resource Information Database (UNEP/GRID), shows zones based on the probability of occurrence of earthquakes of 5 general intensity levels. These intensity levels are associated with the 1956 version of the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI). The MMI scale consists of 12 intensity levels describing potential damage to the earth's surface and built environment. Each zone illustrates an area where the associated MMI level is the maximum likely intensity of an event with an estimated return period of 50 years. The probability that degrees of intensity shown on the map will be exceeded in 50 years is 20 per cent.

The source of this data set is "The World Map of Natural Hazards", published by the Munich Reinsurance Company - Geoscience Research Group (Munich Re).
Purpose: The United Nations Environmental Programme/Global Resource Information Database (UNEP/GRID) is maintained for the purpose of assisting the international community and individual nations in making sound decisions related to resource management and environmental planning, and where applicable providing data for scientific studies.

Process Description: The ARC/INFO coverage "EQUAGEO" was produced by the United Nations Environmental Programme/Global Resource Information Database (UNEP/GRID) in 1994 on the basis of the World Map of Natural Hazards, published by Munich Reinsurance Company - Geoscience Research Group (Munich Re) in 1988. UNEP/GRID digitized the paper map on earthquakes and added coastlines from the PC World Databank - II (by ESRI, as modified by UNEP/GRID). The original map scale was 1:34,000,000. Although no projection is mentioned, the map does appear similar to those in Van der Grinten's projection. The map covers the entire world. Vendor Product Name - GNV-63, Natural Hazards Database on EarthquakesVendor Product Description - World earthquake intensity zones in accordance with the 1956 version of the Modified Mercalli Scale (MM). Pacific Disaster Center (PDC) acquired this layer from UNEP/GRID. PDC reprojected the shapefile to Mercator/WGS84.
