PDC Integrated Hazards
- Identification Information:
- Native Data Set Environment: Microsoft Windows XP Version 5.1 (Build 2600) Service Pack 3; ESRI ArcCatalog 9.2.5.1450
- Description:
- Language of Dataset: en
- Abstract: The PDC Integrated Hazards layer visualizes a collection of current and real-time incidents which have been designated "potentially hazardous to people, property, or assets" by PDC DisasterAWARE decision support system automated processes. In addition to integrating these various hazards from authoritative sources into a single, convenient layer, the underlying map service also includes hazards that have been manually logged by the disaster management professionals using PDC-hosted DisasterAWARE applications. Hazards are typically expired automatically based on pre-defined timelines, but can be left active as long as deemed necessary by the professionals responsible for maintaining hazard data.
- Purpose: The purpose of the Hazards data layer is to merge hazards of interest into a single user-friendly layer.
-
Supplemental Information:
Automated Hazards are created and expired as follows:
1. Tropical Cyclone Track Data (JTWC/NWS). A hazard is created when incident is first reported by an "ADVISORY" status bulletin. The hazard remains active until canceled by JTWC/NWS. For full metadata go to:
http://www.pdc.org/mde/full_metadata.jsp?docId=92339E5F-A77A-4B43-807B-0B63F021D4D4
2. Earthquakes > 4.0 magnitude (USGS), hazard is created when incident is first reported; remains active up to 4 days based on magnitude. For full metadata go to: http://www.pdc.org/mde/full_metadata.jsp?docId={A71A7B86-3B62-460C-A065-B8908AE50DC3}
3. Significant volcanic activity on a global scale as noted by the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report which is a cooperative project between the Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program (GVP) and the US Geological Survey's Volcano Hazards Program. GVP updates the information by 2300 UTC every Wednesday. For full metadata go to: http://www.pdc.org/mde/full_metadata.jsp?docId={496E0CAA-8A74-4FA9-B84B-AA420B3FE007}
4. Tsunami Bulletins issued by Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC). When a Tsunami Bulletin is issued, the PDC parses an email to find the source location of the Tsunami Warning and automatically adds a point to the Hazards layer. The Hazard is expired when the Tsunami Warning Center cancels the warning.
5. National Weather Service Warnings (High Wind, High Surf, Flash Flood) for Hawaii, current advisories and warnings for high wind events issued by the National Weather Service for Hawaii region. Data are displayed by NWS Zone and are updated as data become available. For full metadata, to go:
